And what exactly is a spangled drongo, you may ask?
Well, it's this.
A rainforest bird, glossy black with red eyes and characteristic fishtail. Not commonly seen perched on a frangipani in front of a house, but there you go. Our friend Sally is staying at present and she is a notable birdo, spotted this one out of the corner of her eye as we drove past on our way back from Diamond beach. So we did a u-ey and went back for a good look.
Sally and I have known eachother since we were 18 and doing our Science degrees at ANU. She is the most well-travelled person I know, having been to such places as Uganda where she was poked by a mountain gorilla and Cuba and New Mexico with her brother Monty. In January she is off to the sub-Antarctic. But today, we went no farther than Diamond Beach, where some more work was done on the rainforest restoration project.
Marjory came, she manages the beach stairs really well. More veldt grass and asparagus fern removal was done.
(Below) This little brown tree fungus caught my photographic eye, with the sun shining through it.
Haven't been able to identify this dear little nest, found in a low fork of one of the small trees at the site. It was decorated with lichens and mosses. Sally thought it might have belonged to an Eastern robin.
Tonight we are off to The Manning Theatre for a performance of "The Sum of Us", with John Jarrett in the lead. Should be fun. If I can stay awake, suffering a bit with a chest cold and sounding like I'm at the end of a long career of cigarettes and street hawking.
