Feeling somewhat faded in the morning, but determined to recover, we visited Heaven on a Stick, aka the Bridestowe Lavender farm, where Sandra works. I had to be bodily dragged from the shop, still clutching at more and more lavender-themed merchandise. Sandra made us a lovely cup of coffee and we ate lavender infused lemon cake. Lavender has long been my favourite aroma. In my next life, I will own an organic lavender farm in Tasmania.
Chris, it turns out, is an expert in lots of things, not the least of which is wine. His refined palate and encyclopaedic knowledge of Tasmanian wine took us on an educational tour of cool country pinots and chardonnays. He shared some wonderful bottles with us, such as his Piper's Brook 2002 Kreglinger Vintage brut de blanc together with his home grown fruit and vegetables,during several excellent home cooked meals. So this Monday, we went to two of his favourite vineyards: Jansz and Piper's Brook. Jansz winery is an elegantly, artistically presented delight, full of beautiful artworks and informative displays. It specialises in methode champenoise bottles and we bought a delicately amber, crisp and complex rose. Piper's Brook served us a wonderful lunch of rich pot pies, cheese prosciutto and fruit platters, all accompanied by generous tastings of their varied range. Chris and I got progressively more loquatious in our descriptions of the generous tastings on offer, David patiently remained sober.
We farewelled Chris, and headed for Coles Bay, driving at a sensible speed. Unlike most Tasmanians, who it seems, regard any road not actually having houses on it, as “Freeway” and therefore, able to be driven on at over 100Kph. We arrived in one piece, and met up with friends Robyn and Chris Borough again. That night was spent in a rather noisome caravan/cabin combo of dubious providence, listening for rain.
