Last Post (for a while)

Apologies for the long silence. Since the last post, we have left Forster, spent a few days in Sydney and tomorrow, we drive back to Canberra. So this is the last day we are Roving All Over! It's back to a settled existence for a time.  We will be in our apartment at Greenway until about mid January.  Where we go after that depends on what happens in the Great Real Estate Sale. We have our Greenway apartment on the market: http://www.allhomes.com.au/ah/act/sale-residential/5-58-eileen-good-street-greenway-canberra/1316777090711 The Bega farmhouse and land is also for sale, but will not have a web listing until the new year.

So, some catching up! Last time I posted, we were in Lakeside Resort at Forster, where sunsets are the speciality. Birds are also a feature, and David took a series of shots of a kookaburra being furiously harassed by a noisy miner. Wonder what the kookaburra had done to it? Or its nestlings, perhaps...

On our last night in Forster, the wonderful Boroughs, who moved into their gorgeous house about five minutes previously, were organised enough to put on a dinner party. Much appreciated, thanks!

Then it was hitch up Clover to Rover and head south to Sydney for what is nearly the last leg of our 6 months on the road. Travelled via the F3, an engineering tour de force, and quite a beautiful road too, the way it glides through slashes made in sandstone cliffs and opens vista after vista.

In Sydney, we stayed Friday night with Peter (David's brother) and Elaine at Hornsby. On Saturday, off to Surry Hills where David's sister Linda lives in a wonderful old terrace house with partner Phil. They were having a housewarming and the instruction was to "wear falsies". Pause for a moment, the possibilities are endless, are they not? I tried the socks in the bra trick, but only achieved a boost up to what looks normal, so settled for bits of false hair in various colours.  Meanwhile, David was very inventive, achieving a disturbing third eye, complete with false eyelashes to all three eyes. That third eye kept watching me in bed all night, it was the stuff of nightmares.

Peter's Sideshow Bob outfit was even more disturbing. He is the gentlest of men. Elaine also tatted up and kept her arabic style arm tats for work on Monday, hoping to look like a tough moll instead of a social worker. But people just wanted to know if she'd been hennaed for a wedding...

Late in the party, a plan was hatched for a Hume family breakfast at some unseemly hour the next morning. Amazingly, all were seated, smiling and hoeing into huge platefuls by about 10am, hangover or no hangover.

Nephew James is just finishing his Chinese Medicine course and on Monday, gave David acupuncture treatment for his back-related leg pain. This involved the insertion of needles many centimetres long, all the way in. Fortunately David couldn't see what was going on. James said: It's great when you can work on them face down. David's leg has felt better since. Good work, James.

We had picked up the latest sketch plan of our prospective Forster house from the designer there, and being in Sydney gave us the chance to show it to the panel of architects: Linda, Phil, Kirstin and Nate. Phil and Linda have now each offered to do a sketch plan that improves on what we have. We are delighted to have any help. It's a very stressful process though.

Today is Tuesday and we had a great day with Peter and niece Julia. Started with breakfast in a cafe in Surry Hills.  Not quite up to Melbourne standards, but OK. Street entertainment provided by this fit young garbo, who chatted on a mobile held against his left shoulder the whole time he was emptying bins.  Didn't miss a beat.

Then we spent hours in the exhibition of photography by the astonishingly talented Annie Liebowitz. It was at the MCA on Circular Quay.

Of course, after the exhibition I came over all artistic for a while and attempted some special shots of my own, using a camera about one tenth the size of Annie's smallest one. Here is an iconic sight, all eggshelly in the bright sun.

And this is the best of a series juxtaposing natural foliage with thrusting city structures.  As it happens, this is the building where Linda works.

And on that note, we will leave you for a while. Have a wonderful Christmas and may 2011 bring you peace and joy. Thankyou for reading our web log of our journey up and down the eastern seaboard. We may be back in 2011 when the building process starts.  Or perhaps there will be a chance to Rover All Over a bit more in a little while.

Farewell for now.
